Unexpected King

by Ken Sheldon

/

lyrics

You didn’t come in royal robes,
upon your head, no crown of gold.
The only callers at your birth
smelled of sheep dung and the earth.

For those who dwelt in stately halls
never heard the midnight call.
But outcasts camping on a hill
heard the sound and grew quite still

with eyes upturned, transfixed in fright
as blazing wings dispelled the night.
and heaven’s herald gave the call
that you had come to save us all.

For they had trusted kings and princes
and they had been let down.
Maybe this unexpected king
is what they needed now.

Still today, you come in silence
unexpected, without violence
gently knocking at the door
of the seeker, rich or poor.

But what a king, who comes to serve
and give us what we don’t deserve--
a love that cost him everything
what a king, what a king!

Just like them, we live in shadows
seeking desperately the light
darkness hovers all around us
in what feels like endless night.

We have trusted kings and princes
and they have let us down.
Maybe this unexpected king
is what we need right now.
Maybe this unexpected king
is what we need right now.
